An Economy of Generosity
Many of our offerings at Pathways to Mindfulness mention that donations are greatly appreciated. Why donations instead of prices? How much should I give? What is an economy of generosity? Bridget answers these and other questions below.
I am exceedingly fortunate to be able to earn my living doing what I love most – helping people gain the mindfulness skills to navigate the challenges of a human life with greater resilience and less stress.
I don’t want anyone to be prevented from access to the resources of Pathways to Mindfulness for financial reasons. And so, I would like to invite you to join me in an experiment – we’ll agree to operate on an economy of generosity. That means that I share my knowledge and practice of mindfulness freely, without charging a fee, and you support me through your donations.
This is not the way our Western economy works, where we try to get the most product for the least amount of money, and this concept might be new to you. Hence, the reason for an experiment. I still need to earn enough to pay my bills. I’m hoping this experiment will prove that an economy of generosity can work.
When I have offered services on a donation basis in the past, people often ask, “Well, how much should I donate?” I usually answer, “That depends on your financial resources and how generous you can be without creating harm for yourself and those who depend upon you.”
To help you decide what to give, I will always suggest a sliding scale donation. For example: the sliding scale for a 6-week class would be $30 - $90; donations for the drop-in groups might be $10 – 30 per month.
If you are blessed with financial resources, you can always give more than the suggested donation. If money is tight, you can feel free to give less. If you can’t afford anything, you are still welcome.
There are several ways to participate in our economy of generosity. When you join a group, attend a retreat, or participate in a course, I include specific instructions on how to send money to me. You can also use the button below to send money by PayPal.
For those who want to participate in our economy of generosity in ways other than money, consider what skills or services you could provide in exchange for the knowledge and practice suggestions I share. Feel free to reach out to me by email at bridget@pathwaystomindfulness.com to discuss options.
However you choose to participate in our economy of generosity, welcome to this experiment! Welcome to Pathways to Mindfulness!
